Number of Arts students increasing in top IIMs

The placement season for management courses is completed in most of the colleges for the year 2020. Unlike the former years, the percentage of students enrolled from the Humanities and Arts students making it to top IIMs is actively increasing for the consecutive academic sessions of 2018, 2019, and 2020. IIM Ahmedabad states that the current 2020 batch of students enrolled in the postgraduate management program consists of Arts students from various backgrounds like mass communication, advertising, and literature.

This year Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM A) observed an increase in Arts students for its current MBA 2020- 22 batch, it is being expected that the trend will soon pick up. At IIM-A, the numbers have risen to roughly 5%, up from about 3% in 2019. Whereas, at IIM Kozhikode there has been a slight rise of 1% from around 5% in 2019 to 6% in the current batch, while in IIM Bangalore there has been no increase in the number of Arts students for its PGP 2020-22 batch.

Previously the MBA program embraced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) because back then most of the students scored well took Science as their branch of study. But these days the trends have changed and due to the fact that some of the bright students are attracted to arts and sciences in comparison to the exclusive interest in professional disciplines like engineering, medicine, and accounting till about 15-20 years earlier.

What works in favor of Arts students?

The officials of top IIMs have observed that the Non-STEM students have a deeper understanding of critical situations, unlike the Science and Commerce stream students who emphasize on the facts of the argument. As far as competitive exams are concerned the MATH required in these exams is covered in Class X in most of the educational boards. With the learnings and practice of those concepts, a student can easily solve the CAT problems. Apart from this, the admission policies of colleges these days admit students with diverse perspectives to contribute greatly to the discussion-based learning process.

Arts students at top IIMS fare equally well as commerce and engineering students. According to stats conducted by the Interntionatio Business Week, there has been an increase in the number of CEOs who have arts and humanities as one of their predictions for the new millennium of this century.

What really counts is that the diversity in the MBA curriculum that has given Arts students the flexibility to set their intellectual and academic capabilities and shape a better future for society.
